(((SIGNALS))) Void Sinker โ “Hanged”
A signal comes before the full transmission. (((SIGNALS))) is Doomnation Radio’s space for bands to tell us about their new single and what it points toward: why this song came first, where it lives on the album, and what world it carries inside it. Three questions only, the rest is up to them.
Void Sinker is the solo project of Italian musician Guglielmo Allegro. Built around drone, sludge, and the particular gravity of sound in a vacuum, the project has moved across three previous releases, each rooted in oceanic imagery. Cycle, the upcoming LP due on 15 May 2026, marks a turn outward: from the ocean floor to open space. “Hanged” opens the record.
(1) Why did you choose “Hanged” as the opening track on Cycle?
Hanged is a song with two very important meanings: on the one hand, I wanted to reconnect the ocean trilogy with the vastness of the void with a slow and inexorable monolithic riff, as if the transition from ocean to space was a communion of slowness that unites movement underwater and in zero gravity. Second, it’s a huge homage to what I consider the original drone doom track par excellence, “Hung Bunny” by the Melvins, from their 1992 album Lysol. They are one of the bands that more than any other is always an inspiration for all my musical projects and for my vision. When I thought of a monolithic riff for the first track of the album, they came to mind with that mammoth of a hypnotic and cave-like riff that drags you down the rabbit hole.
(2) Cycle marks a shift away from the oceanic themes of your recent releases and back toward the cosmic void. Where does “Hanged” sit in that movement?
Hanged wants to take the listener from the ocean depths to the cosmic void by immersing them with a slow and inexorable riff. As in water, so in space the movements are very slow, and this feeling of heaviness is the core of the project itself. I like to experiment with speed from time to time, see “Kraken” from Creatures or “Sulfuric” from Debris, but if I have to think of a real imprint of my project I think the weightlessness of the vacuum mixed with the pressure of the underwater ocean are the two experiences that come closest to listening to the project itself.
(3) If “Hanged” were a scene in a film, what happens in it?
I think it could be the tragic ending of a horror film where the protagonist realizes he is stuck in what he thought was a cycle but is actually a loop from which he can’t free himself unless he accepts his fate and sinks inexorably into madness. More than a film, what comes to mind is the ending of Silent Hill 2, where the protagonist James Sunderland realizes only after a few attempts that he has been stuck in the city for twenty years. The game proposes that he is trapped in a purgatorial cycle, forced to repeat his tragic journey over and over again as punishment, to confront his sins.
Cycle is out 15 May 2026. Written, produced, and recorded by Guglielmo Allegro. Artwork by Doomolith.
